Cleveland Browns Film Room: Mason Graham's Career Day

Last week, we looked at how Cleveland Browns rookie defensive tackle Mason Graham did against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and his performance then showed signs of development, but also some growing pains. Against the Miami Dolphins, Graham continued to build on his foundation, putting together the most disruptive game of his NFL career.

Graham had an advantageous matchup, facing guards Cole Strange and Jonah Savaiinaea, a second-round rookie who owns by far the worst Pro Football Focus passing grade in the NFL. The hope was that Graham could capitalize on his matchup with a fellow rookie, especially one performing at a poor level. He certainly did that, earning a very good 78.2 run defense grade and putting together a number of quality pass rushes, even if they translated into only one official pressure.

In the first clip below, Graham is shading the inside shoulder of the right tackle as the 4i. The Dolphins try to run outside zone to the right, with right guard Cole Strange engaging Graham right off the snap. Graham is in complete control of the block, anchoring and locking out his right arm while keeping his eyes up and reading the run. He effectively disengages and brings down running back Devon Achane for a one-yard loss.

In clip #2, Graham is shading the inside shoulder of the left guard as the 2i. The Dolphins again run outside zone to the right, and this time Graham is able to beat Savaiinaea to the spot, bursting past him to get penetration into the backfield, forcing Achane to curve laterally, after which Myles Garrett drops him for the loss. Graham is still adjusting to his slimmed down body and new role, but these are the kinds of plays that make you excited about his future.
