Aston Villa team news as loan star gets shock Europa League start against Go Ahead Eagles

Manager Unai Emery has made wholesale changes to his Aston Villa team for this afternoon’s Europa League match against Go Ahead Eagles.

Villa haven’t made a habit of weakening their line-up in the league phase so far this season but their strength in depth is being put into action in the Netherlands today.

Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, John McGinn, Donyell Malen, Morgan Rogers and Boubacar Kamara all come out of the side that started the Premier League win against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

There are returns to the starting line-up for Tyrone Mings, who plays for the first time since he was injured against Fulham, and for Emi Buendía and Ollie Watkins, who had such a huge impact off the bench at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Lamare Bogarde comes in for Kamara but there’s no place for Marco Bizot despite his superb display in Villa’s most recent Europa League game at Feyenoord.

Sancho starts in Deventer

But the big surprise is on the left side of the three attacking midfielders and it’s a start for Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho, who will be desperate to make his mark after his first few months at Villa were decimated by illness.

It’s only Sancho’s second start for Villa after the League Cup second round match against Brentford. He was substituted on in one Premier League match and one Europa League match before his enforced absence and most recently played almost a month ago.

Sancho has a wealth of European football experience. He is a Conference League winner and a Champions League finalist, and has played in 54 matches in total in continental competition for Villa, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and Chelsea.
