Hornets’ rookie rotation raises questions after first-round pick sits out

The Charlotte Hornets opened their season with a statement victory, defeating the Brooklyn Nets 136-117 on Wednesday night at Spectrum Center. Brandon Miller and LaMelo Ball each scored more than 20 points, while Miles Bridges and rookie center Ryan Kalkbrenner both recorded double-doubles.

What caught the attention of NBA observers and Hornets fans alike was the team’s heavy reliance on its young core. No. 4 overall pick Kon Knueppel earned a starting spot and played 25 minutes, showcasing smooth perimeter shooting by scoring 11 points on 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range. Second-round pick Ryan Kalkbrenner also started, logging 27 minutes and finishing with 10 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Fellow rookie Sion James, another second-round selection, contributed off the bench with 17 minutes of versatile play — adding two points, four rebounds, two assists and one block.

However, one rookie notably absent from the action was Liam McNeeley, the team’s No. 29 overall pick. Despite a promising preseason in which he impressed coaches with his shooting and defensive effort, McNeeley did not see the floor in Charlotte’s opener.

Head coach Charles Lee’s decision to bench McNeeley raised eyebrows, particularly given the lopsided score that might have allowed the Hornets to test their full rookie class. Lee has emphasized player development, but it appears McNeeley will need to wait for his opportunity.

The Hornets will have two days off before traveling to Philadelphia to face the 76ers on Saturday, where McNeeley could make his much-anticipated NBA debut.
