Man United are looking to sign a holding midfielder in the January transfer window to bolster their midfield.
The midfield position is a big area of intrigue for Manchester United despite their recent upturn in form. They beat Liverpool 2-1 over the weekend, and even in what was an excellent performance from Ruben Amorim’s side, they still looked overrun in the middle of the park.
There were periods of the game where Liverpool dominated in terms of chances, and the Red Devils struggled to regain possession and momentum in the game. If they had a strong, but also intelligent holding midfielder, it could help Amorim’s side to control games better and control the possession.
Reports have linked United to several midfielders ahead of the January transfer window, several of whom are from the Premier League. But there is another name that United were heavily linked with in the summer, who could emerge as their number one choice in January.
Man United are ‘still monitoring’ Angelo Stiller
Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller has had somewhat of a breakout year in 2025, starting to emerge for the Germany national side, and also becoming one of the star performers for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. Man United were linked to the 24-year-old in the summer transfer window late on, but the Red Devils failed to get a deal over the line.
According to Sky Germany Journalist Florian Plettenberg on X, United remain keen on the German international. He posted: “Manchester United are still monitoring Angelo Stiller, who is very open to a move next summer. MUFC Should VfB (Stuttgart) buy out his release clause, they currently intend to demand more than €50 million for the 24-year-old midfielder.”

Stiller has made 11 appearances for Stuttgart in all competitions so far this season, scoring one goal and providing four assists. Despite being a more defensive midfielder, his assist stats in his career have been very impressive, meaning he wouldn’t only help to solidify Amorim’s midfield, but also could benefit the Man United attackers, too.
Who else could Man United sign in January?
In terms of other holding midfielders, Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton has been linked a lot with Man United. The Red Devils are understood to have made him their first choice target at the position, but Palace likely won’t want to sell the 22-year-old in January.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is also a target, but the Seagulls placed an £100m plus price on him, making a deal very difficult for United to complete during the season. Again, Baleba could be one to watch at the end of the season rather than in January.
For January, Sporting CP’s Morten Hjulmand and Al-Hilal’s Ruben Neves seem more likely targets. Hjulmand has a release clause which United could pay to get over the ‘not wanting to sell in January’ hurdle, and Neves’ contract expires at the end of the season, meaning Al-Hilal could be looking to sell him before he becomes a free agent.
