The FBI dropped a bomb on the NBA world on Thursday morning by making a swath of arrests related to an alleged gambling ring. Among those arrested were Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trailblazers head coach Chauncey Billups.

According to the FBI and U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Joseph Nocella, the arrests of Billups and Rozier — in addition to former NBA player Damon Jones — are linked to two alleged fraud cases: one tied to sports betting and the other linked to “rigged poker games.”

The FBI — who has accused Terry Rozier contributing to the scheme by using private insider NBA information — of also said in their press conference that the alleged gambling ring has ties to “La Cosa Notra,” otherwise known as the Mafia.

According to ESPN, Rozier and the other defendants “had access to private information known by NBA players or NBA coaches that was likely to affect the outcome of games or players’ performances and provided that information to other coconspirators in exchange for either a flat fee or a share of betting profits.”

“This alleged illegal gambling operation hustled unwitting victims out of tens of millions of dollars, and created a financial pipeline for La Cosa Nostra to help fund and facilitate their organized criminal activity,” said FBI New York Assistant Director in Charge Christopher Raia, adding that it is “one of the most brazen sports corruption schemes since online sports betting became widely legalized in the United States.”

Following the announcement of Rozier’s arrest, NBA Twitter pulled the tape from a Miami Heat game in March against the Cleveland Cavaliers in which Rozier put on a particularly, and potentially suspect, terrible performance.

In the March 5 matchup between the Cavs and Heat, which the Cavs won by a score of 112-107 — the Cavs were favored by 11.5 points, meaning Miami covered the spread — Rozier played 40 minutes and shot 3-for-14 from the field, 1-8 from three, and had four turnovers.
