Why Liverpool game vs Brentford was moved as Arne Slot eyes title boost

Liverpool will take on Brentford in an unfamiliar kick-off time this weekend, with the Premier League clash having been moved as a result of the Reds' midweek trip to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz played well as Liverpool beat the Bundesliga side 5-1 despite going a goal behind in the first half. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate also scored headers from corner kicks, with Dominik Szoboszlai putting the icing of the cake.

On Saturday, Liverpool will kick off at 8pm UK time (3pm ET). The game was initially scheduled to be shown in the early television slot on TNT Sports in the UK.

However, because Liverpool played away from home in Europe on Wednesday, Premier League rules now dicate that the clash must be moved back into the later slot in order to allow for extra recovery time.

Jurgen Klopp was a big critic of teams having to play at 12.30pm UK time (7.30am) on a Saturday having played midweek, especially after an away trip in the Champions League.

But the rules changed at the start of last season to ensure that such a scenario does not play out again. Teams can, though, be put in the early slot if they play at home midweek in European competition.

Liverpool has lost each of its last three Premier League games, which is as many as it had in its previous 39, winning 27 of those and drawing nine.

The Reds last lost four in a row in February 2021, while they last had a losing streak equal or longer than that within their first nine games of a league season in 1993-94.

Arne Slot could be without Alexander Isak and Jeremie Frimpong through injury after they limped off against Eintracht Frankfurt. Isak felt his groin, the Liverpool boss said, while Frimpong hurt his hamstring.

Alisson Becker is likely to still be sidelined while Giovanni Leoni is a long-term absentee after undergoing surgery on his ACL injury. Slot will offer the latest update on his squad's fitness in a press briefing at 10.30am UK time (5.30am ET) on Friday.

"When you're on a bit of a losing streak, it's important to try to get the win come what may," Andy Robertson said after Liverpool won in Germany on Wednesday.

"We got the performance as well. That was the manager's message before the game: focus on the performance, focus on doing things right, and if you do that, then the result will come.

"Obviously, then falling behind, I thought the reaction was really good in terms of not panicking, which a lot of teams can do when you're four defeats in a row.

"I thought the reaction was great. We got our noses in front and then we never looked back."
