When Xabi Alonso took charge of Real Madrid, one of his boldest early decisions was to put his faith in Arda Guler.
It was not an easy decision as the Turkish international was coming on the back of a difficult season under Carlo Ancelotti, who had been very critical and unforgiving about his lack of defensive work.
However, as we near November, it is perhaps fair to deduce that Xabi Alonso’s gamble has paid off in a big way.
Arda Guler now an indespensable part of Real Madrid
From being a promising but fragile talent, Guler has now evolved into an indispensable part of Los Blancos’ engine room.
As reported by AS, Guler’s transformation under Alonso has been remarkable. Once viewed primarily as a technical playmaker, he has grown into a complete midfielder, one who can not only create chances and dictate tempo but also defend when necessary.
His performance against Juventus in the Champions League summed up that evolution: ten ball recoveries, seven chances created, and a 97% pass completion rate.

The Bernabeu crowd rose to its feet when he was substituted, applauding not just his flair but his tireless commitment.
Those numbers have vindicated Alonso’s trust in the Turkish youngster. Indeed, Guler is now the sixth most-used player in the squad, the team’s leading assist provider, and the third-highest scorer.
His influence has extended well beyond statistics, though as he gives Madrid rhythm, control, and spark in midfield, playing a crucial role in linking the defence to attack.
The club’s decision to sign teenage prodigy Franco Mastantuono this summer, another left-footed attacking midfielder, initially raised questions about Guler’s place in the team. But instead of shrinking, the Turk has thrived.
This has given Real Madrid a fresh lease of life, especially at a time when Jude Bellingham has not been performing up to the mark.
