The San Francisco 49ers are among one of the best teams in the league through seven weeks. With a record of 5-2, despite a lengthy and growing list of injuries, head coach Kyle Shanahan is getting the most from his reserves.
From the quarterbacks, both Brock Purdy and Mac Jones, to the wide receivers and more, just about every position has endured losses due to injuries. Stars like tight end George Kittle, wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall, as well as veteran linebacker Fred Warner, have all missed games for the Niners this season.
Despite not getting much production from the running back position until recently, Christian McCaffrey is one of the few athletes for San Francisco who seems to be unphased by the injury bug.
To provide insurance, general manager [John Lynch made a deal](https://ninernoise.com/49ers-brian-robinson-trade-genius-for-one-very-obvious-reason) with the Washington Commanders for running back Brian Robinson. With the departures of Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason last offseason, Robinson was intended to be the complement in a one-two punch in the 49ers' rushing attack.
With the trade deadline looming, Lynch can still swing another deal to add a quality rusher for the upcoming playoff push for San Francisco.
49ers must trade for Jets running back Breece Hall
--------------------------------------------------
Even without Robinson, the Commanders have the most rushing yards entering Week 8. Washington has 1,042 total yards on the ground, while San Francisco has just 667 and ranks in the bottom half of the NFL.
There's an intriguing team with the seventh most rushing yards, the New York [Jets](thejetpress.com). This AFC team is winless in seven games and won just five times all of last season.
Running back Breece Hall has been one of the few bright spots on the Jets roster this year. Though he hasn't crossed the end zone yet in 2025, Hall has 448 yards on the ground on just under 100 carries (99).
The Jets running back turns age 25 next summer and still has plenty left in the tank. A switch to the West Coast and the NFC could provide a jolt for the Niners while giving McCaffrey plenty of insurance and ensuring he's not overused.
Hall has recorded 14 rushing touchdowns in his first three seasons in the league. The former Iowa State Cyclone standout has also tallied eight receiving touchdowns so far as well.
Another selling point on buying in on a trade for Hall is that (because he is a free agent in 2026) San Francisco would likely receive a compensatory draft return for the running back in the event he signs elsewhere.
Adding a second rusher to the 49ers offense who can be a dual threat makes their offense even more potent, regardless of whether Purdy or Jones is the quarterback. If the Niners want to make a deep playoff run like they have grown accustomed to since 2013, then adding Hall is a no-brainer.
