New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields downplayed recent comments made by Woody Johnson after the team owner ruthlessly threw him under the bus.

Fields’ first season in the Big Apple has hardly gone according to plan, with the 26-year-old’s struggles prompting the Jets to bench him in favor of Tyrod Taylor during last weekend’s 13-6 defeat to the Carolina Panthers.

On the heels of Fields’ latest underwhelming performance, Johnson savagely insinuated that the signal-caller’s play was largely to blame for the Jets’ 0-7 start to the 2025 campaign. "It's hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that he's got,” he said.

“I mean, he has ability, but something just is not jiving. ... You have to play consistently at that position, and that's what we're going to try to do for the remainder of the season."

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Fields claimed that he did not catch wind of Johnson’s brutally honest remarks — despite the fact that head coach Aaron Glenn addressed the situation in a team meeting held earlier in the day.

"I didn't see any comment. Y'all know I'm not on social media at all," Fields said. When pressed further on if he knew the gist of what Johsnon said, the Ohio State product added: "I wasn't. I'm not on social media.”

Given his standing as the player who touches the ball most on offense, Fields noted that he inevitably is the one who has to shoulder much of the blame for the Jets’ underperformance thus far.

“It doesn't bother me,” he said of Johnson’s criticism. “Of course, everybody knows I need to play better, we need to play better as a team. No matter how the offense does as a unit, I'm going to get the blame and I understand that. That's just what comes with the job. It's what comes with it so you can't let anything kind of affect your mind, my mind.

“That is what it is, no matter if it's him, no matter if it's family members, even teammates sometimes. There's going to be times where you have to be the only one who believes in yourself. That's his opinion. Like I told you guys after the game on Sunday, I'm at peace and all my focus is working each and every day and getting better."

Through six games this season, Fields has completed 86-of-135 passes for 845 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions while also rushing 42 times for 257 yards and another three scores.

Yet over the last two weeks, Fields sported a meagre 15-net passing yards in six consecutive quarters. With stats like that, Johnson conceded that the Jets’ offense has no chance to succeed.

"If we can just complete a pass, it would look good,” Johnson said. “You know, we got to complete some passes, you got to convince them that you can do something. Otherwise it’s hard to have a game that you can win.”

It appears as though Fields isn't looking to bury the hatchet with Johnson any time soon, as he showed little interest in speaking with the billionaire in-person.

“I don’t think me talking to him is going to do anything,” Fields said. “Like I said, it’s not going to make me play better. It’s not going to give me more confidence on the field. I don’t think there’s necessarily a point in talking about that.”
