PITTSBURGH --Aaron Rodgers laughed when talking about offensive tackle Broderick Jones’ odd tackle of him after he threw a 68-yard touchdown to Pat Freiermuth against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback says that he appreciates Jones’ energy, as he is always the first player to celebrate with Rodgers after a play, but he can not be tackling him from behind like he did.
“Brod is always the first one to come find me after a play. It could be, like, the first big pass down to D.K. on third down. He’s coming and dapping me up. And what you don’t see in the video is right after the throw, he’s coming over to me and shaking me and shaking me. And, like, I text him, I say, Hey, man, I love your energy. I love everything you’re about. But also, I’m 41, okay? You can’t be out there tackling me likethat. But I love Brod. We had a couple laughs about it. And, you know, I told him I’m getting him next. He better watch his back,” Rodgers said.
In the moment, Rodgers looks heated, and for good reason. Jones jumping on him like that could result in an injury. Meanwhile, Jones said he never meant to tackle him to the ground.
“We’re still joking about it,” Jones said. “Yeah, he was a little mad but it’s all right. You know, it’s football. It gets intense. It’s still no love lost. It’s just the energy that he brings and that I bring. He told me don’t lose the fire and I told him the same. We shall see on Sunday after he throws another touchdown, I might tackle him again.”
Jones is saying the last part in jest, but the tackle has played some of the best football of his entire career over the last few weeks.
That, along with the resurgence of the rushing attack, has allowed the Steelers’ offense to get going with Rodgers under center, and Jones’ improvements are part of that swell.
