Mike Tomlin issues blunt message to Steelers’ struggling secondary: ‘Hasn’t met my vision’

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin did not let the secondary’s performance go by the wayside after Joe Flacco and the Bengals torched them through the air.

While Tomlin says he is not discouraged by the performances the Steelers secondary has put out, he is going hard at them behind the scenes.

“It certainly hasn’t met my vision to this point, but I’m not discouraged,” Tomlin said.

Publicly, he has not ripped the secondary despite Ja’Marr Chase setting records against them. Even aside from that, others such as Andrei Iosivias, Noah Fant, and Tee Higgins made big plays.

Yet, Steelers cornerback Darius Slay says it was not like that in private. Following the game, Slay says that Tomlin nailed his secondary on poor technique and the struggles they had throughout the game.

“He ain’t gonna sugarcoat nothing,” Slay said. “There wasn’t too much positive. The only thing positive to come out of this is a learning experience of what we need to do better. We had a little meeting. There’s one thing about Mike T, man. I do appreciate it. He’s thorough. He’s gonna tell you what it is.”

The Steelers have continued to harp pn their run defense, which also struggled after giving up explosive plays against the Bengals.

Yet, the secondary’s performance struggled just as much if not more than that, and Tomlin clearly was not happy with their performance on that front, either.
