Lawsuit wouldn't stop NFL team from hiring Jon Gruden, Goodell says

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Jon Gruden's ongoing lawsuit against the NFL in Clark County wouldn't preclude him from getting another job in the league, Commissioner Roger Goodell said.

Speaking Wednesday at a press conference following league ownership meetings in New York, Goodell was asked if the NFL planned to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court after a recent Nevada Supreme Court ruling found in Gruden's favor.

He was also asked if he could "see an NFL where Jon Gruden coaches again."

"The latter part ... is not my decision," Goodell said. "If he- if he's offered a job and gets a job, he'll be coaching in the NFL. That's not- that's not something that's in my purview."

The commissioner added that he did not know the status of the lawsuit.

Gruden resigned as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 after several racist, homophobic and misogynistic emails surfaced in media reports. He had sent the emails to a Washington team executive from his time as a broadcaster for ESPN.

After resigning, Gruden filed a lawsuit in Clark County District Court against the NFL and Goodell, **[alleging the league intentionally leaked](https://news3lv.com/news/local/jon-gruden-sues-nfl-over-publication-of-offensive-emails#)** his emails to force his resignation.

The NFL appealed, arguing that Gruden is still bound by the league's arbitration clause and the suit should be moved to closed-door proceedings. **[The Nevada Supreme Court disagreed](https://news3lv.com/news/local/nevada-supreme-court-sides-with-jon-gruden-allows-lawsuit-against-nfl-to-proceed-publicly#)**, writing in a 5-2 opinion that forcing Gruden into an arbitration hearing overseen by Goodell would be "unconscionable." The NFL's request for a rehearing was denied.

Gruden's lawsuit was paused to allow the appeals process to play out. A status check on the case is next scheduled for Nov. 24.

For now, Gruden is working as a contributor for Barstool Sports after signing a multi-year agreement with the outlet last year.
