Unai Emery reflects on a Europa League defeat

Unai Emery expressed his thoughts on a 2-1 defeat for Aston Villa at Go Ahead Eagles.

The Villans took an early lead thanks to a close-range finish from Evann Guessand, and they kept looking for a third triumph in a row in the Europa League after a 2-0 victory over **Feyenoord**and a 1-0 win at Villa Park against Bologna. However, Mathis Suray saw a deflected effort hit the back of the net, ending their perfect defensive record in Europe, before the hosts went ahead in the second half.

EmilianoBuendía, the super sub of the side, missed a penalty that would have drawn the teams level, but the Villa head coach continues to be impressed by his team's resurgence in recent weeks.

“We’ve started the season very good in the Europa League and Europe helped us to get better and feel more comfortable in this competition.

“Today was a match we were dominating, we were creating chances, and we scored the first goal. We conceded a few chances to them and they were clinical. They competed very well, defending fantastic. We tried with the penalty we had, but we missed it, and we have to accept it.

“We have to tell our supporters who are here with us how grateful we are that they are supporting us and coming with us to play here away. Away is an experience I’ve always felt is difficult, like today. I’m positive, but today I’m feeling disappointed and a little frustrated.”

“We keep going forward, thinking about Man City at home on Sunday. We broke our good form, but we have to react quickly and recover. There’s still work to do in how we want to build the team.

“The idea and the message now is to keep going forward and prepare the next match, trying to take experiences through this match tactically, individually and how we manage 90 minutes.”
