The Carolina Panthers decided to add a quarterback to their practice squad after Bryce Young suffered an ankle injury against the New York Jets in Week 7. Needless to say, the choice they made was no coincidence.
Mike White, a veteran who spent the entire 2024 season on the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad and the 2025 offseason with the Bills, was signed by the Panthers earlier in the week.
Despite joining the team, White isn’t expected to be an option to back up Andy Dalton if Young cannot go. That job will likely go to practice squad quarterback Hendon Hooker. White’s job, however, is simple. He was brought in to give the Panthers as much intel as possible heading into Sunday’s game.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales admitted as much on Thursday.
“Our defensive staff, myself included, are just talking to him about things he might have seen here and there,” Canales told the media. “There’s no secret code involved here. He’s a Panther, right now. (We’re) trying to compete. Trying to get as much info as we can.”
How much intel the Panthers can get from White is yet to be seen, but you can’t blame Carolina for trying to get as much information as possible ahead of Sunday’s game against the Bills.
It’s not as though Buffalo doesn’t have their own option for intel. Linebacker Shaq Thompson joined the Bills this offseason after spending his entire career in Carolina. He was on the roster last season in Canales’ first season and played under defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero for two years.
