Morehead State works to educate athletes on sports betting rules

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Federal authorities have charged Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat player Terry Rozier with money laundering and wire fraud in connection with an alleged sports betting scheme.

The charges have prompted WKYT to ask questions about how local colleges are educating student athletes about sports betting regulations and risks.

Jamey Carver, senior associate athletic director of compliance at Morehead State University, said technology has made sports betting more accessible than when he started in college athletics over two decades ago.

“When I started out if you wanted to make a bet, you had to be in Vegas or you had to be in New Jersey wherever that might be,” Carver said.

“It’s exploded within the past five years, I think we can all appreciate technology has made it easier,” he said.

Carver said educating student athletes about sports betting restrictions is important to prevent them from losing their athletic eligibility.

“Any sport whether that’s professional, minor whatever that might be. We are not allowed to bet on any sport that NCAA has a championship in,” Carver said.

Morehead State keeps students in compliance through in-person meetings, a specialized online education platform and NCAA resources.

Carver said regulating and educating athletes presents challenges due to their connection with technology.

“I think that’s the growing pains of any collegiate level right now. It’s how are you regulating and educating your athletes the best you can,” he said.

The NCAA approved a rule change this week allowing college athletes to bet on professional sports. The new rule goes into effect November 1.
