‘Every Day is Sunday’ details NFL’s rocky road to American sports dominance

SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) - Wednesday we learned from ESPN that 18.8 million people watched Monday’s game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions, a record for a week seven Monday night game.

After another primetime thriller, the Lions have once again captivated fans, showing the NFL is more popular in Michigan than ever.

That popularity rings true just about every where else, too.

Looking at the big picture, the NFL generated $23 billion in revenue in 2024 and is the biggest sports league in the world, but that wasn’t always the case.

New book, _Every Day is Sunday_, written by new York Times business & NFL reporter ken Belson details how the league has become the juggernaut it is today with Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft, and Roger Goodell as the central cast of characters.

“There’s 32 owners. Probably about 10 of the owners do the bulk of the work when it comes to negotiating contracts with networks, labor negotiations, that kind of issue, whether to go overseas,” Belson said. “A lot of the owners, there’s a core group of them: Jerry and Robert being of the most prominent, who do the bulk of the league’s new business and generate new business and have new ideas.”
