Erling Haaland sent a heartwarming message to Scott Carson after the former Manchester City goalkeeper announced his retirement. Carson, 40, was released by City over the summer when his contract expired, having spent six years at the Etihad.
The goalkeeper made only two appearances for the Citizens, but he was part of a remarkable 11 trophy wins, including their treble triumph in 2023. Pep Guardiola always held him in high regard and ensured that he was around the team on matchdays as much as possible, offering a wealth of experience.
After making his debut with Leeds United in 2004, Carson went on to play for 10 clubs across a 21-year professional career. The shot-stopper also earned four senior England caps.
On Thursday, Carson took to social media to announce his retirement, having been a free agent since July. "After an incredible journey between the posts, it's time to hang up the gloves," he posted on Instagram.
"Football has given me everything - memories, friendships, and moments I'll never forget. Thank you to every teammate, coach, fan, and club that's been part of my ride. It's been an honour."
Carson's ex-team-mates swarmed the replies section to send him well-wishes, including Haaland. "Miss you pal all the best," the City superstar wrote.
Haaland also said when Carson left the Etihad: "The kind of teammate every squad needs. All the best in the new chapter."
Former City right-back Kyle Walker added: "What a legend mate enjoy retirement mate was a pleasure for all them years and some good memories along the way."
Jack Grealish, who's on loan at Everton, said: "The CAT. Incredible career."
Multiple ex-City players, including Ederson and Fernandinho, used goat emojis in a show of affection towards the 40-year-old. Guardiola could be asked about Carson's retirement on Friday when he speaks to the media to preview Sunday's match against Aston Villa.
Previously, the City manager has spoken glowing about Carson. In March 2022, following his first Champions League appearance for City, Guardiola hailed: "We are delighted. He is very important to us behind the scenes.
"His chemistry with Ederson and Zack Steffen is fundamental in the locker room. People listen when he speaks. He made the biggest save (of the game)."
Carson has a 19-year-old son, Hayden, who's on the books at Wolves. The defender is currently on loan at National League North side Chester.
