Eddie Howe has been on media duties in the last few moments, speaking to the local press ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League clash with Fulham.
It’s a chance to build on Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over Benfica in the Champions League, and the boss has been discussing the fitness of Sandro Tonali.
Howe reveals that he trained on Wednesday but is still “not 100%”, meaning he is “tough and go” for tomorrow after illness left him as an unused substitute in midweek, allowing Lewis Miley to play the full 90 minutes.
Discussing Tonali’s fitness and availability for tomorrow’s game, Howe said:
> _“Sandro is still the player we’re monitoring._
>
> _“He did train on Wednesday but he’s not 100% so he’s touch and go for Saturday.”_
Howe has also been discussing the Italian’s future on Tyneside, confirming reports that emerged on Wednesday regarding a ‘secret’ deal that saw him sign an extension during his 10 month ban.
Eddie believes the new deal, until 2029 with an option of another year, is a “great thing” for Newcastle, insisting Tonali is “very happy” at the club and appreciative of the love and support he receives from his teammates and the fans:
> _“The extension is a great thing, but the most important thing was how he conducted himself during that period._
>
> _“Sandro is very happy. He feels the love of players and fans and is integral to our squad._
>
> _“You can never foresee what the future holds, I’ve learnt that. But we’re enjoying his qualities. His form has been brilliant”_
Hopefully Tonali can recover in time, although Tuesday did prove that we’re in safe hands with Miley if the 19-year-old needs to start again in that holding role.
Elsewhere, Yoane Wissa, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall remain out, as expected, with the trio all due back next month.
