Aberdeen's next Conference League opponents fire ominous warning with Crystal Palace upset

Aberdeen fans and players have been left reeling after the club's heaviest defeat in Europe at the hands of AEK Athens on Thursday night.

The hosts ran riot with six goals to dump the Dons to the bottom of the Conference League table after two games, with the goal difference taking a battering against a far superior Greek outfit.

But those hoping for a far more positive outcome for Jimmy Thelin's side on their next European away day may suddenly be dreading the worst.

A trip to Cyprus to face AEK Larnaca is up set in just under a fortnight, and their latest exploits have sent shockwaves after a stunning victory at Selhurst Park.

FA Cup winners Crystal Palace had been looking to mark their first home match in a major European competition with a victory, but Oliver Glasner's side fell to an unexpected 1-0 defeat.

The Cypriot Cup winners struck after Eagles defender Jaydee Canvot gave the ball straight to Marcus Rohden, with Palace keeper Dean Henderson caught off his line when Riad Bajic found the net with an impressive finish.

The South London outfit had fielded a strong starting XI that has impressed in recent weeks, most notably handing Premier League title holders Liverpool their first defeat of the season.

But they found themselves unable to crack Larnaca's stubborn defence, with the result sending the Cypriots to joint top of the table alongside Italian side Fiorentina.

Larnaca's last and only experience against Premier League opposition saw West Ham hand them a 6-0 aggregate defeat in 2023 as David Moyes' side went on become the first English club to lift the Conference League trophy.

Thelin's Dons have two Premiership fixtures to tackle before turning their attentions to Larnaca, with Hibs visiting Pittodrie on Sunday before a midweek trip to Ayrshire for a clash with Kilmarnock.

Aberdeen have the following weekend off due to the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals taking place, with their original fixture against Rangers shunted to January.
