Sandro Tonali fitness doubt: Will he play in Newcastle United’s weekend clash with Fulham

Newcastle United fans face another anxious wait over the fitness of key midfielder Sandro Tonali ahead of this weekend’s Premier League fixture against Fulham.

Manager Eddie Howe confirmed today that the Italian international is "touch and go" to feature at St. James' Park after suffering from a virus that kept him out of recent training sessions.

Despite the recent positive news regarding Tonali’s long-term contract extension, which reportedly runs until 2029, his immediate availability is now the main concern following his recent substitution against Brighton and his subsequent absence from the training pitch on Monday.

Sandro Tonali’s health and availability

Tonali was withdrawn during the 2-1 defeat at Brighton last weekend and subsequently missed Monday’s training session.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match, Eddie Howe provided an update on the player’s condition: “Bit of illness for Sandro, so he will be touch and go for the game,” Howe confirmed.

“We'll give him every opportunity. He wasn't there at training today, and he's such an important player, so we'll use all the hours we have.”

The manager acknowledged Tonali's integral role in the midfield alongside Bruno Guimarães, especially after the Italian midfielder’s sensational form following his return from his betting ban.

Midfield depth tested ahead of European tie

Tonali’s potential absence, or limited involvement, places greater emphasis on the midfield unit.

Lewis Miley was confirmed to have played the full ninety minutes against Benfica on Tuesday, performing admirably, and Jacob Ramsey is also nearing a return from his own injury layoff.

Should Tonali be unavailable, Howe will likely rely on the in-form Lewis Miley to continue his impressive run.

The club will be extremely cautious with Tonali, especially with a demanding UEFA Champions League fixture against Athletic Club scheduled for the following Wednesday, meaning the management is unlikely to risk a full-throttle return for the Italian just yet.
