Chelsea are said to be working on a new deal for one of their key stars.
Chelsea are said to be working on new terms for a player whose contract is not even close to expiring. The Blues have handed out some hefty contracts in recent years, agreeing ultra-long term deals in a bid to spread the cost of large transfer fees.
The rules have changed a little around that, but those who were already signed to long deals remain tied down for years to come.
One of those players is midfield star Moises Caicedo, who is arguably the most important player in Maresca’s plans currently. Despite an underwhelming start at the club, Caicedo has gone on to be every bit the player Chelsea thought he was when they spent £115million, and perhaps even better.
At 23 years of age, Caicedo is one of the best players in the world in his position, and Chelsea will be glad they have him tied down until 2031. But that doesn’t mean a player cannot leave, and the biggest source of discontent usually comes from a player feeling underpaid.
Chelsea reportedly want to get ahead of that, and it’s claimed they are already speaking with Caicedo in a bid to agree a new contract that would see him rewarded for his efforts with a better wage, although the contract length will surely remain unchanged given the length of it.
“Moises Caicedo is fully focused on Chelsea,” Fabrizio Romano told his YouTube channel. “I maintain what I said in the summer: Chelsea wants to discuss a new contract with him.
“He’s already on a big salary, but his face remains a crucial part of the project. So I see Chelsea maintaining these conversations with Moises and his new representatives, but for sure the focus is on a new deal for him at Chelsea.”
Maresca is obviously a huge fan of Caicedo’s, and he is likely to be in favour of the club doing anything that increases their chances of keeping the midfielder for as long as possible, especially given he is only 23 years of age, suggesting he is on course to be the undisputed best player in his position.
Maresca actually alluded to that towards the end of last season, saying: “In this moment he is one of the best, if not the best, defensive midfielder in the world. He is doing fantastic. The best thing about Moi is that every day he is working serious. He is very humble, very kind, polite. He is a fantastic guy. It was another great performance.” Caicedo has a 7.27 WhoScored rating across all competitions this season.
