Christian McCaffrey is on track to become the first player in NFL history to pass 1,000 rushing and receiving yards in the same season twice.

The San Francisco 49ers star is making the most of a clean bill of health after being hampered by injuries in recent seasons. The 29-year-old has put his team on his back, leading the Niners to a 5-2 start to the season despite several big-name stars being sidelined with injuries, including quarterback Brock Purdy and revered pass rusher Nick Bosa.

McCaffrey is both the leading rusher and receiver for the Niners through seven weeks, and his influence on the team was perfectly summed up by full back Kyle Juszczyk.

The three-time First-Team All-Pro is averaging a career-low 3.5 yards per carry, but he has been given a huge workload in the running game and has accumulated 465 yards and three touchdowns.

Catching passes out of the backfield has always been a huge part of McCaffrey's game, and he has been highly efficient for head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense this season. The former Carolina Panthers star has hauled in 53 passes for 516 yards and three touchdowns.

The fact that McCaffrey has yet to cough up a lost fumble through seven games only makes his performances more impressive, considering the sheer volume of touches he has had with the Niners being left undermanned at receiver and tight end due to injuries.

With 10 games to go, McCaffrey is tracking to finish the regular season with 1,129 yards on the ground and 1,253 yards through the air. If he passes the four-figure mark in both categories, he will make NFL history as the only man to achieve the feat twice.

McCaffrey first did it with the Panthers in 2019, when he racked up 1,387 yards in the running game and added 1,005 receiving yards.

The only other men to pull off the landmark achievement are former 49ers runner Roger Craig in 1985 and Marshall Faulk for the St. Louis Rams in 1999.

McCaffrey had his biggest game of the season in Week 7, racking up 129 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a 20-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. He also had seven catches for 72 yards.

"I always love just being able to physically run the ball and control the game like that. I think most people prefer to do it that way, but each team has a different identity, and you got to do whatever you think gives you the best chance to win," Shanahan said.

McCaffrey might not be alone in the 1,000-1,000 club this season, with Falcons playmaker Bijan Robinson also tracking to pass both marks.

The third-year running back has flown out of the gates with 524 rushing yards, plus 390 yards on 30 receptions to put himself on track to reach four figures in both stats by the end of the regular season.
