Chargers' Oronde Gadsden is 2nd in NFL history for rookie tight end record

Sometimes, a rookie will put up a huge game and then sort of vanish the following week.

Not Los Angeles Chargers tight end Oronde Gadsden II.

Gadsden had more eyes on him than ever before when he took the field for Thursday Night Football after a record-setting Week 7.

And he made sure the Chargers had no trouble routing the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8.

Gadsden finished with five catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. All of his production came in a blowout first half before the Chargers put it in cruise control the rest of the way.

In the process, Gadsden moved into second place in NFL history on one list.

He now has 308 receiving yards through the first five games of his career. That's second ever by a tight end, according to Underdog.

Brock Bowers holds the all-time record in this category at 313 receiving yards through five games, that coming last season for the Raiders.

Gadsden is actually tied for second with his 308 yards, joined by Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts.

And just behind Gadsden and Pitts is current Colts rookie tight end Tyler Warren.

Clearly, it's a banner era for tight ends breaking through right away upon joining the NFL.

Gadsden is different than Bowers, Pitts and Warren, though. Those three guys were all drafted in the top-half of their respective draft first rounds.

But Gadsden had to wait until pick No. 165 in April's draft, deep into the fifth round.

He's proving that may have been the wrong call. The Chargers are happy they got him, and Gadsden has quickly looked like a rising star.
