Daniel Farke says Leeds need to create more for player on five-hour goal drought

Leeds United fans were promised a big spree in the summer transfer window. Many expected that every area in the squad would see significant upgrades in the team ahead of their Premier League bow.

The Whites did splash the cash, paying over £100million, but only a fraction of it was spent to boost the attack. Noah Okafor was the only permanent transfer in attack – Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin joined as free agents. Early in the season, Leeds had a lot of goalscoring woes; they only managed one goal from open play in their first few games.

So Farke made some changes and tweaked the team. In came Noah Okafor, Calvert-Lewin and Brenden Aaronson into the attack in a new-look front three. Even though they failed to score against Fulham, they managed three goals against Wolves in the next game. Since then, the Whites have scored just three goals in three games. And the frustrating thing is that they create a lot of chances – expected goals in recent games proves this.

Leeds have created chances worth 10 goals, but have only managed to score seven in total this season – one of the worst marks in the league.

Daniel Farke says Leeds United need to create more for Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The Leeds boss thinks that the solution for his team is to be better in both boxes, as he mentioned in the defeat to Burnley. Even though he does have a point, some players are guilty of squandering these chances. Dominic Calvert-Lewin being one of the main culprits. Farke has now come out in defence of his striker, basically saying that the team need to create more for the England man:

“He’s working really good for us in terms of pressing, his link-up play and holding the ball up,” he said ahead of Friday’s game.

“Yes, there’s a couple of situations he could have finished better in.

“There’s no doubt about that but he’s proven before that he’s a proven goal scorer and he will score goals, if he has chances.

“I’m happy to have Dominic and I’m pretty sure that it’s just a question of time and not a case of if he scores because I’ve no doubt that he will score.”

Leeds have been creating chances for the striker

The problem in what Farke has said is that, it is not the team failing to create for Calvert-Lewin, but rather the striker failing to convert the chances he has been presented with. The former Everton man has missed five big chances this season; one of the highest in the league.

He has been by far the beneficiary of most of the chances has created this season. So Daniel Farke cannot really blame his side for not creating enough chances for him – Leeds need better in front of goal if they are to survive this season.
