Giants DC accepts blame after 19-point collapse against Broncos

New York Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen opened up on the team’s fourth-quarter collapse against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Despite entering the final period with a 19-point lead, the NFC East team left Empower Field at Mile High with a 33-32 loss. The Broncos scored all their points in the fourth quarter, completing a big comeback with only 15 minutes left on the clock.

On Thursday, Bowen took the blame for the defense’s collapse. He admitted it was his job to make sure the team was in a good position to win.

“It’s all about how you want to delegate your resources,” Bowen said, via a transcript from the team. “The situations, they’re always changing. They’re always evolving. They’re all a little bit different. Them not having any timeouts. I think they were in seven-man protection. They had those guys in there. So, I mean, it’s a cat and mouse game, understanding how they’re going to attack you.

“I had an idea of what was coming. It felt like we were in a good call. Obviously, it didn’t work out, and it wasn’t what we wanted it to be. So that’s something we’re evaluating. I have continue to work that to make sure I can put our players in the best position to execute in those moments.”

Bowen’s decisions raised many eyebrows among fans. He didn’t have Dexter Lawrence on the field to put pressure on second-year quarterback Bo Nix late in the fourth quarter, among other things that people think hurt the Giants’ plans.

In the end, the Broncos won the game with a field goal. Place kicker Jude McAtamney missed two extra points during the game, earning plenty of criticism, too, but Bowen has been under fire for several weeks now.

Brian Daboll rejected the idea of making changes to his coaching staff, but Giants fans have grown frustrated with Bowen’s performance.
