The Netherlands national team have always boasted impressive talents, with a handful of Manchester United players eligable for their ranks.
For the men’s team, Matthijs de Ligt has been a routine call-up for the squad, with this most recent international break being the first in a long time that he wasn’t selected.
Joshua Zirkzee has also represented the Dutch national side, however lost his spot since moving to Old Trafford due to struggling to establish himself in the Manchester United squad.
However, in the Women’s team, defender Dominique Jannsen has been routinely called up, now being entrusted with the captain’s armband, as reported by All For United WFC on X.
The decision was made in the wake of Sherida Spits retiring from international football, handing over the torch to the 30-year-old.
Dsicussing being given the responsibility of team captain, Dominique Jannsen commented: “It’s an honour, I am very proud. Arjan [Veurink] came up to me and told me. I am mostly looking forward to playing tomorrow. It’s temporary, he wants to see how things go now.”
However, it may not be a permanent decision, with manager Arjan Veurink commenting: “We haven’t made a final decision yet on who will be our first captain or what the leadership group will look like.”
Veurink continued: “We believe it simply takes more time — during training sessions, matches, and within team dynamics — to make the best possible decision.
“It’s an important role for the team, and one that needs to be broadly supported. That’s why we want to take the time to make this choice carefully.”
Arjan Veurink has chosen Manchester United’s Dominique Janssen as the captain of The Netherlands for tomorrow’s game, his first international match as manager.
