David Moyes Praises Versatile Everton Player & Provides Injury Update Ahead of Spurs Game

Everton manager David Moyes has praised defender Jake O’Brien ahead of Sunday’’s match against Spurs.

The Blues welcome Thomas Frank’s side to Hill Dickinson this weekend looking to bounce back from defeat at City.

Everton go into the game just three points behind sixth-placed Spurs, though the London club possess a significantly better goal difference.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference today, Moyes praised defender Jake O’Brien for his performances at right-back.

However, he reiterated that the Irish international will need to fight to start in his natural position.

When asked if the 24-year-old could get a chance at centre-back, Moyes replied: “He is a centre back but he is doing a good job for us at the right back in the main.”

He continued: “He’ll need to keep fighting for his own position.”

It’s difficult not to feel sympathy for O’Brien, who has rarely featured in his natural position since joining the club in 2024.

While his job at right-back has been commendable, it’s clear that investment in that position is a must in January.

James Garner has previously done well at right-back, and could slot in should O’Brien move inside.

SPURS WILL BE A TEST FOR BLUES, BUT FRANK’S SIDE ARE WITHOUT SOME KEY PLAYERS

Meanwhile, Moyes confirmed that Nathan Patterson picked up an injury featuring for the U21s, and will be out for “a couple of weeks.”

However, the Scot has been suffering from a hernia issue, which will be addressed while he is sidelined.

The Everton manager expressed his disappointment at Branthwaite’s setback, but wouldn’t be pushed on a timeframe for his return.

On the bright side, there are no further injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s game.

Meanwhile, Spurs will be without James Maddison, Radu Dragusin, Ben Davies, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke.

There will also be late fitness tests for Yves Bissouma, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie and Kota Takai.
