Cam Skattebo fined $15K by NFL for violating concussion protocol

NEW YORK (AZFamily) — New York Giants breakout rookie running back and former Arizona State star Cam Skattebo has been punished for violating the NFL’s concussion policy.

The league and player’s association jointly announced the fines on Friday. Skattebo was fined $15,000. The team received a fine of $200,000, and head coach Brian Daboll was fined $100,000.

The fines are related to the Giants’ Oct. 9 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The joint statement says while quarterback Jaxson Dart was being evaluated for a concussion in the blue medical tent on the sideline, Daboll and Skattebo went into the tent to speak with Dart.

The NFL and NFLPA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) states: “Only medical personnel deemed essential to the care of the athlete may be present for the tent and/or locker room evaluation. This includes the team physician best qualified to evaluate concussion, the club athletic trainer, and the sideline Unaffiliated Neurotrauma Consultant.”

No one else is permitted inside the tent during an evaluation in order to be certain the player is getting a complete medical evacuation, according to the CBA.

The league’s investigators found that medical personnel properly followed all concussion protocols regarding Dart, and the violations came from Daboll and Skattebo when they entered the tent and spoke with the quarterback before his evaluation was complete. The statement says their actions created a perception that they were interfering with the exam.

The Giants’ medical staff, NFL and NFLPA agreed that their actions had no impact on Dart’s concussion exam but were still a violation of the CBA’s outlined protocol.

The joint statement says the team took actions to make sure a similar violation does not happen again. Skattebo and Daboll’s fines were for “conduct detrimental to the league.”

In the game against the Eagles on Oct. 9, Skattebo gained over 100 total yards and scored 3 rushing touchdowns. Dart eventually cleared concussion protocol during the game, throwing for 195 yards and a touchdown in the Giants’ 34-17 win.
