Man United missed out on millions as Mason Greenwood transfer action emerges

Manchester United missed out on the opportunity for a big financial boost in the summer transfer window, with Marseille’s transfer stance on Mason Greenwood emerging.

The United academy graduate was sold to the French club in the summer of 2024. United received a fee of £26.6 million, but they also added a 50% sell-on clause as part of the deal.

Greenwood impressed in his first season with Marseille, scoring 21 times in Ligue 1, while also providing six assists. It prompted reports that a move away from the French club could be on the cards.

Teams in Saudi Arabia were linked with an interest, but a move never materialised. An update on interest from clubs has now been given.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has said that interested parties were ready to pay a big fee for Greenwood in the summer, but Marseille had a clear transfer stance. Marseille felt that the forward was too important to let go, with club directors and manager Roberto De Zerbi in agreement.

They snubbed any interest, with Greenwood remaining where he is until at least January. The sort of fee being offered has not been mentioned, but it’s likely to be significantly more than what Marseille originally paid for him just over a year ago.

It’s a situation that United will be keeping a close eye on, given the sell-on clause in his contract. The clause means that United will receive half of any transfer fee given to Marseille should they decide to cash in on him in the future.

Therefore, their stance not to cash in in the summer means that United missed out on what would have been millions of pounds. The extra money would have come in handy as Ruben Amorim was backed by the club with a spend of around £230 million.

Greenwood has continued his impressive performances for Marseille so far this season. In his 11 games in all competitions, he has scored seven goals and provided four further assists.

He started he club’s Champions League clash against Sporting CP on Wednesday night, but was sacrificed at half time following a red card for Emerson Palmieri just before the break. Marseille were leading 1-0 at the time, but went on to lose the game 2-1.
