Paul Merson’s Man Utd vs Brighton prediction would leave him ‘shocked’ if one key player is not in starting XI

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has now dropped his telling prediction for Manchester United’s upcoming Premier League match with Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils will return to action for their final match of October hot on the heels of back-to-back Premier League wins for Ruben Amorim’s men.

Liverpool hosted Manchester United at Anfield in the aftermath of the October international break and the Red Devils produced a strong showing last weekend.

Goals from Bryan Mbeumo in the first half and Harry Maguire in the second half ensured that United sealed a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Premier League tie.

Ahead of the Liverpool clash last Sunday, United had hosted Sunderland at Old Trafford and had beaten the Black Cats 2-0 in their Premier League contest.

The Red Devils, on the other hand, picked up consecutive Premier League wins for the first time ever under United manager Ruben Amorim since his appointment in 2024.

Speaking in his column for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson admitted that Amorim’s huge call to drop Benjamin Sesko for the Liverpool match proved to be a brilliant move.

“Manchester United were very good against Liverpool,” he said.

“They have now won three out of the last four games, but this is a very tricky game coming up for Ruben Amorim’s men. Brighton won this fixture quite easily at Old Trafford last season.

“The jury is still out on Manchester United. If they win this game, it would be a great result.

“Amorim made a bold decision to bench Benjamin Sesko in the game against Liverpool and it paid off quite brilliantly for him.”

Paul Merson sends a major warning amid his Man Utd vs Brighton prediction for the Premier League match

Benjamin Sesko was left out of the United starting XI against Liverpool, despite scoring in back-to-back Premier League matches against Brentford and Sunderland.

Amorim made the decision to bring Matheus Cunha back into the United XI and played the former Wolves star alongside Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount.

“But I doubt he will do that again because, unlike Liverpool, Brighton may decide to sit back deep in this game,” Merson continued.

“So, I’m not sure how effective Matheus Cunha can be in drawing defenders out of position like he did against Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.”

Merson has admitted that there would be a real ‘shock’ factor if he did not see United striker Sesko come back into the starting XI for the Brighton match.

“I know Amorim really likes Mason Mount, but I’d be shocked if Sesko doesn’t play because this game really suits the big forward more,” he added.

“I don’t think Manchester United will win this game, going for a draw here.”

The Sky Sports pundit predicted the exact Premier League scoreline to be 1-1 for Saturday’s clash between United and Brighton at Old Trafford.
