Could the New York Jets actually swing a trade for Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders? The wild conjecture surfaced this week when some speculated that the Browns could try to acquire Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson and that they might need to move Sanders in order to make it happen.
It sounded ridiculous then, and it’s equally ridiculous now.
During a recent episode of the Jets Final Drive podcast, a fan asked if there were any chance of the Jets bringing Sanders to the Big Apple, and Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic shot the idea down immediately.
"Well, he said ‘can they' and yes they can, but no they will not be doing that," Rosenblatt said.
To clarify, the fan was not including Wilson in his trade idea; he was actually asking if New York could land Sanders for a fourth-round pick, but Sanders’ “connection” to Gang Green began with the Wilson rumors (if you can call it that) earlier in the week.
Trading Wilson has never made much sense for the Jets considering they just signed the former first-round pick to a four-year, $130 million contract extension during the offseason. His visible frustration with head coach Aaron Glenn back in Week 6 sparked speculation that New York could potentially move him by the trade deadline, but the chances of that actually happening are slim to none.
As for Sanders? If the Jets really wanted him, they would have selected him in the NFL Draft last April. Why would they trade a fourth-rounder for him now when they passed on him in Round 4 earlier in the year? The Browns also don’t seem all that interested in jettisoning Sanders at the moment, either.
New York will almost certainly be taking a quarterback in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The Jets are currently 0-7, and it’s crystal clear that Justin Fields is not the answer under center. But Sanders probably isn’t, either. At least not in the eyes of New York’s current regime.
The Jets will face the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday. Ironically enough, they have a meeting with the Browns on Nov. 9.
