Brock Purdy Injury News Creates $100K Opportunity for 49ers' Mac Jones

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was able to notch limited practice participation throughout the week as he continues to deal with the toe injury that’s kept him off the field for much of the 2025 NFL season.

That being said, it appears Purdy is set to miss his fourth consecutive game when the 49ers take the field for Sunday’s Week 8 matchup against the Houston Texans.

On Thursday night, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said Purdy is “not quite yet ready” to return to action.

Rapoport also pointed out a unique financial opportunity for backup quarterback Mac Jones, who’s started each of San Francisco’s last three games in Purdy’s absence. He also started for the 49ers in Weeks 2 and 3 as Purdy dealt with the same nagging injury.

“Mac Jones looking at another start as Purdy continues to recover from that relapse of that turf toe injury,” Rapoport said. “By the way, if Mac Jones wins this week he gets $100,000 in incentives. He’s already earned $400,000 [in incentives].”

Jones signed a two-year, $7 million contract ($5 million guaranteed) with the 49ers before the 2025 season. The former Patriots/Jaguars quarterback earns an extra $100,000 for every regular-season win where he plays more than 25% of the offensive snaps. He’s set to earn another $550,000 if he plays 50% of the team’s regular-season offensive snaps and makes the playoffs.

Jones is 4-1 as the 49ers’ starting quarterback so far this season, completing 67.0% of his pass attempts for 1,404 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. His solid play has allowed the San Francisco franchise to take a patient approach regarding Purdy’s recovery timeline.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan gave an update on Purdy’s status Thursday.

"It's getting better. That's all I've got. It is getting better. He's still limited this week… It's tough because I get asked all the time, so the shorter I get, it sounds like I'm being a jerk, but I really have nothing else to say. He's just getting better,” Shanahan said, via KNBR.

Sunday’s Week 8 matchup against the Texans will kickoff at 1 p.m. ET.
