The Dallas Cowboys won't have cornerback Trevon Diggs for a second straight game in Week 8 after he was ruled out with a concussion on Friday.
At least from the outside looking in, there is mystery surrounding the Cowboys' starting cornerback, who popped up on the injury report last week with the concussion before being ruled out.
It was later revealed that Diggs had suffered the concussion in some sort of accident at home, but the details of that accident remain unclear.
"Trevon Diggs came in this morning with some concussion symptoms after having an accident at his home," head coach Brian Schottenheimer said last week. "He's been checked out by our doctors and is in the protocol and will miss the game."
On Friday, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones set off even more alarm bells.
During his spot on 105.3 The Fan, Jones said that Diggs "had several things going on that pertain to past injuries" and a trip to injured reserve isn't off the table for him, which is obviously an ominous update.
“He’s had several things going on that pertain to past injuries. So there are things we’re looking at there," Jones said, according to The Athletic's Jon Machota. "We haven’t ruled that out (injured reserve). We’ll look at that tomorrow as well.”
But it gets worse.
When asked about the possibility that Diggs may have played his last game with Dallas, Jones said the Cowboys "haven't even gone there yet," which leaves the door open for Diggs to potentially not be back at all in 2025.
Of course, the most notable past injury Diggs has suffered was a torn ACL in 2023, and he had unrelated issues with the knee last season that led to another surgery.
The Cowboys' latest injury report does not list Diggs with a knee issue, though.
If Diggs lands on injured reserve before the Week 8 game with the Denver Broncos, he would be out until at least Week 13 (Cowboys have a bye in Week 10)
And, if he doesn't play the rest of the season, it's quite possible Diggs will have played his last game in Dallas, as he's a prime cut candidate for 2026 given his injury problems and overall ineffectiveness since signing an extension.
The Cowboys sport the league's worst pass defense and already had a major need at cornerback with the struggles of Kaiir Elam on the boundary.
Now, it looks like they might have two needs at the position ahead of the Nov. 4 NFL trade deadline.
