Carl Rushworth makes Coventry City transfer admission

Carl Rushworth is not looking any further than May and the prospect of helping Coventry City gain promotion to the Premier League. But the on-loan goalkeeper admits that the club ticks a lot of boxes for him if the Sky Blues were to bid for his services on a permanent basis in next summer’s transfer window.

Signed by Brighton & Hove Albion in 2019 from non-league Halifax Town, Coventry are the sixth club he’s been sent out to, having previously spent time at Worthing, Walsall, Lincoln City, Swansea City and Hull City, without having made a single League appearance for his parent club.

Asked about his current contract situation, the 24-year-old revealed: “I’m contracted until 2027, I believe, so another year and an option, I think I’ve got.”

As for whether he’s thought beyond at the end of this season, he said: “I’ve tried not to. I tried to just like take it a little bit at a time. Obviously, I know that when we’re in May that there’s only one thing that I’m going to be thinking of and that’s hopefully going to be promotion.

“So that’s kind of like the end thing and I haven’t really thought of anything further than May at the moment.”

Coventry have a recent history of upgrading loan deals into permanent contracts with the likes of Callum O’Hare from Aston Villa, Ben Sheaf from Arsenal and, perhaps most notably, Rushworth's former Brighton team-mate, Viktor Gyokeres.

So can the goalkeeper – who went down in Sky Blues history this week with the all-time club record of going 613 minutes without conceding a goal – see himself as a permanent City player if the club made a successful bid for his services?

“Yeah, obviously with Vik as well, yeah, I could,” he said. “I really like it and I’m just saying that I’m really enjoying my time here. The group’s really good, I like the location and the club is going in the right direction for me as well.

“There’s the fanbase, so there’s a lot of things that tick the boxes, so yeah, I’m really enjoying my time at the moment.”
