The Italian missed training in the build-up to Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Benfica in the Champions League due to illnes but was still named among the substitutes.
Magpies’ head coach Eddie Howe said pre-match he would only use Tonali if he felt he had to and fortunately he didn’t, as a goal from Anthony Gordon and a brace from Harvey Barnes recorded a fairly straightforward victory.
Many presumed Tonali would recover in time for Fulham and likely to return to the starting line-up, but that is not guaranteed.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Howe said: “After a game, you've got a couple of sore bodies to look at, but nothing serious,” Howe said. “Sandro's still the player we're monitoring.
“He did train on Wednesday but didn't feel 100%, so he's the one that's probably touch and go for the game.”
Will Tonali play? And what about other potential changes amid a busy fixture period? Here’s how we expect Newcastle to line-up against the Cottagers at St James’ Park.
