Aston Villa make progress in talks with 31-year-old utility man, reach agreement in principle

John McGinn is reportedly inching closer to signing a new contract with Aston Villa after making progress in talks with the West Midlands club.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, John McGinn and Aston Villa have made progress in talks over a new contract. The Villans are keen on tying their club captain to fresh terms, and discussions between the two parties have progressed. They are also eager to tie Matty Cash, Youri Tielemans, and Morgan Rogers.

Bailey said, “It is great news for Villa that Roberto Olabe has hit the ground running, it shows a real relationship between him and Emery, that he can come in and just continue talks and indeed make quick progress. Am told Cash’s deal is done and McGinn is also agreed in principle. Clearly they want to get these deals done before January, which makes sense as they can then attack the window fully.”

John McGinn and his career so far

John McGinn has established himself as one of the most underrated midfielders in the Premier League since Aston Villa returned to the top flight several years ago. A native of Glasgow, the Scot spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the youth division at St. Mirren. Meanwhile, Aston Villa signed the 31-year-old from Hibernian in August 2018.

McGinn has been a utility man for Aston Villa due to his ability to reprise every role in the middle of the park. The Scottish international has made nearly 300 appearances thus far for Aston Villa while chipping in with 33 goals and 41 assists. However, the veteran midfielder has entered the final two years of his contract.

What next?

It is hardly surprising that Aston Villa’s decision-makers have been keen on tying John McGinn to a new contract. While the Scotsman’s role has slightly reduced in the last few seasons, he remains an asset for Unai Emery, making his mark as a box-to-box and attacking midfielder.

The Aston Villa manager recently confirmed the West Midlands club’s talks with McGinn, Morgan Rogers, and Matty Cash over a new contract. The latest update has revealed that the 31-year-old Scot is on the cusp of signing his next deal.

Aston Villa and McGinn’s entourage have an agreement in principle, and an official announcement on the new deal should come soon. So, the Scottish international has committed his future to Aston Villa, with the union set to continue for the long haul.
