Cleveland Browns News and Rumors 10/25: Wandering Aimlessly in the Dark

CLEVELAND, OHIO (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans! We're just a day away from the Browns facing off against the Patriots in a critical game for both clubs, and then we're into Bye Week. Speaking of byes, my Buckeyes are off this week, so all my football hopes are wound up in the Browns. This, as we all know, is a precarious position.

THE DAILY BLOVIATION

The original name of this Massive Morning Missive was the "OBR Daily Newswire". I use "Cleveland Browns News and Rumors" in the title because I'd like people to read the thing, and that kind of title plays well in Google search results.

The original intent, though, was to go through the Cleveland Browns news every day, pick out good stuff, and link to and comment on it here, thereby giving people a place to catch up on all the Browns news as they start their day in the company of a verbose, caffeine-addled writer who hopefully said something slightly amusing or interesting along the way.

The whole concept, however, relies on quality free Browns content to be available. And this is a dark space. I don't want to send my readers headlong into subscription walls or, worse, lead them to misleading aggregation or clickbait articles. The problem these days, though, is that finding something that is both free to read and worthwhile is too time-consuming to contemplate. It's no longer really possible to provide more than 10 free links a day without sending your readers to read crappy aggregated garbage.

So, I've shifted away from providing a list of links with snarky remarks and instead bloviate about whatever is on my mind, generally about the Cleveland Browns. I have a page where I mark which stories should appear, but it still needs a lot of work before I would make it a centerpiece of the site, such as identifying which stories are paywalled and so forth.

Since I don't link much stuff anymore, I figured I would change it up on Saturdays and link to articles I noticed during the week deserving of some attention. The problem is that I forgot to mark them this week, so all I have are links from the past 24 hours, and as you can see from the links below, some of them aren't inspirational. Still, here we go with some stories from the last day or so.

3 ways Browns QB Dillon Gabriel can finally unleash explosive plays: Film review (Cleveland.com):

I have nothing against Lance Reisland, Sam Penix or any other film reviewers on the scene. They all do good work.

The problem I have with the "film review" feature, in general, is the risk that a reviewer will start with a premise and selectively use film to back it up. These biases are sometimes obfuscated by impenetrable jargon ("Here, Rees deploys the push-pin-pull with a double-wahoo route to the fried-egg side"), much like I hide behind words like "obfuscated" to pummel readers unmercifully into falsely believing that I know what I'm talking about.

It's basically the same risk you take trusting any jargon-spewing "expert" in any domain who tries to baffle you into believing whatever point he wants to make. You have to read these analyses carefully to ensure the review is actually making the point the author claims, and not cherry-picking plays to justify a false premise.

Cleveland Browns News and Rumors 10/24: Unexpected Optimism on a Friday Morning (Channel 19): An attempt at positivism from a guy who sounds like he's somewhere between exhausted and maniacally drunk on Fireball. At any rate, he comes up with some dubious positives for the Browns as they prepare to take on the Patriots—specious reasoning at its finest.

Bills trying to avoid historical NFL losing streak that has only happened to one team over the past 20 years (CBS Sports): This "historical" feat is losing three straight games after going 4-0 to start the season. The Browns did it in 1979. There's rarely a "historical" streak involving losing where you don't see the Browns mentioned.

Man on the move: Myles Garrett relishes switching D-line positions to wreak havoc on QBs, offenses (Chronicle-Telegram): That's all great, but I believe I read that Garrett lines up as a right end 89% of the time. Seems to me that the Browns could do even more of this.

Browns OC Makes Feelings Clear on Shedeur Sanders' NFL Future (Unlinked): The "Insider gets honest" or "makes feelings clear" type of titles is a sure pointer to clickbait, and, indeed, all this article does is repeat the non-controversial things that Tommy Rees said a couple of days ago.

Browns Could Make Shocking Shedeur Sanders Move (Unlinked): Local radio station tries to get listeners and engagement via audio clickbait around the Browns trading Sanders. There is no proof that they are in discussions to do so. Sigh.

See what I mean?

Positive news from the world of sports and beyond...

After a catastrophic flood, this small town united to help a 99-year-old WWII veteran who lost everything - (goodgoodgood.co)

Sad story from Massachusetts, where a 99-year-old WW2 vet and his daughter had their home wiped out in a catastrophic flood. Fortunately, their friends and neighbors rallied via a GoFundMe that will set up the duo in an apartment, saving the service hero. In an age where everyone seems isolated in their phone/media bubble, it's good to know that some good folks are paying attention to what's happening right down the road.
