Man United boss Ruben Amorim fires back at Arne Slot's 'long ball' criticism

Manchester United are looking to win three consecutive Premier League games in a row as they host Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday, October 25.

The Red Devils are heading into this game after wins against Sunderland and Liverpool and will look to keep up that winning momentum.

The victory over Liverpool have boosted the morale of the players and also for manager Ruben Amorim, who was under a lot of pressure at the start of the season due to poor results in the league.

However, after the 2-1-win, Liverpool boss Arne Slot criticized United for their long ball and low block tactics, which made life difficult for the Reds.

Ahead of the Brighton, when Amorim was asked about Slot's criticism, the Portuguese tactician was quick to dismiss such opinions.

"I don't care what Slot is saying, what people are saying about our team," Amorim told reporters ahead of the Brighton game. "I can watch the game and say we can do better, and we need to do better in the future, but sometimes you need to adapt to the game.

"So I don't need anyone to evaluate my team. I can evaluate my team and I am really clear that we should play better with the ball, and we are going to try to do that in this game.

"I understand everything. I am really pleased that the team can play different games. It was an important win, but I was the first one to say we need to play better with the ball.

"Liverpool is in the past. It is not important. It is important what Fabian (Hurzeler) said; to try to understand what is going to happen (against Brighton)."

What did Slot say about Man United's tactics?

Liverpool headed into the Premier League clash against United at home as strong favourites but they ended up losing 2-1 courtesy of goals from Bryan Mbuemo and Harry Maguire whereas Cody Gakpo got the only goal for the hosts.

The Reds created a lot of chances, but they were extremely wasteful as Amorim's tactics of going long every time worked against the Reds.

Therefore, after the game, Slot lamented United's strategy of long-balls whilst keeping a low block in defense as he was evidently frustrated with the result.

"It is always difficult to play against a team that defends in a low block and mainly plays the long ball. It makes it even more difficult when you go one down after one minute when one of our players are on the floor," Slot told reporters after defeat against Man United.

"If you would have told me before the game that against the low block, against so many long balls, that we would have created as many chances as we did I would have not expected us to lose. But that is what we did. We had enough chances to score more than one goal, but on the other hand again conceding two and one of the two was the set piece."

The Dutch manager also doubled down and highlighted that he has never seen a team win the league with such tactics.

"That playing style of long ball and [fighting for the] second ball is not a playing style a team has had that has won this league in the past 10, 15, 20 years. If you want to win the league you cannot, in my opinion, with that playing style. I don’t see this style in any team in Europe that wins the league. It’s not Bayern, not Barcelona, not Madrid, it’s not Liverpool, not City."

Liverpool will travel to London to face Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday, October 25 with the aim of getting back to winning ways in the league campaign.
