Coventry equal 60-year record as Frank Lampard makes history in the Championship

Coventry's 3-1 victory over Watford saw them level a 60-year record in English football's second tier.

Frank Lampard's side continued their electric start to the season with an emphatic home win in Saturday's early kick off, which took their goalscoring tally to a whopping 34 goals in just 12 games.

The Sky Blues found themselves 2-0 up after just seven minutes, thanks to goals from Brandon Thomas-Asante and Jamie Allen.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto then rounded off a perfect first-half with a goal right before the interval, and his strike was significant.

Coventry's third goal saw them equal a 60-year record for a team's goal haul at this stage of a second division campaign.

In the league's history, the last time a side reached the 34-goal mark this quickly came in the 1965/66 campaign.

On this occasion, it was Wolves who brought up the impressive figure, with the feat staying untouched until now.

Given their three-goal lead at half-time, Coventry may well be disappointed not to have built on this in the second period.

Had they added any more to the scoreline, Lampard's team would have equalled a 67-year record.

In the 1958/59 campaign, Sheffield Wednesday reached a staggering 35 goals after 12 games, while league rivals Fulham went one better than them in the same season, notching 36.

They would have had some way to go to beat the all-time best, with Blackburn's 38-goal haul setting the benchmark back in 1954.

Coventry ultimately saw their lead reduced, as 10-man Watford pulled a goal back in the 69th-minute through Imran Louza's penalty.

How has Coventry's season gone so far?

The Sky Blues' latest three points saw them extend their lead at the top of the Championship table to four points.

Second-placed Middlesbrough are in action at 3pm, when they take on Wrexham, allowing their rivals to steal a march for the time being.

Better still for Midlands outfit, they remain the only unbeaten side in the second tier, with eight wins and four draws so far yielding 28 points.

And their record-equalling goalscoring heroics are made even more impressive considering their closest competition.

Only Bristol City and Hull City are closest to their 34-goal tally, with 19 goals each from their respective first 11 games.

Coventry are also among the most defensively solid teams in the Championship, with only two teams conceding less goals.

Middlesbrough lead the way, having let in just seven goals, while third-placed Stoke's total stands at eight.

Coventry eye promotion redemption

Manager Lampard will certainly be hoping his side can keep up their incredible form, as Coventry set their sights on a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2001.

The Chelsea legend fell just short of delivering promotion last season, after reviving his managerial career at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Lampard made an excellent start in his first term at the club following his appointment in November.

The Sky Blues were 17th in the Championship when he took over but remarkably finished the season in fifth.

However, Sunderland beat them 3-2 on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals before eventually beating Sheffield United to promotion.
