Leon wondergoal outshines Biancheri hat-trick as Man United U21s hammer Tottenham

Manchester United followed up their defeat at Barnsley in the EFL Cup with a 4-1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League 2 on Saturday afternoon.

Tottenham began the game on the front foot as Oliver Irow forced Dermot Mee in the United goal to make a save before Luca Williams-Barnett smashed his effort over the bar.

Gabriel Biancheri should have scored United’s opener, when he received a delightful pass from Shea Lacey, only to hit his effort at goalkeeper Luca Gunter.

The duo would combine to put United ahead in the 15th minute. Lacey delivered a cross to Biancheri, who controlled the ball well before finishing with aplomb.

Pele Arganese-McDermott almost drew level for Spurs with a header which looked goal-bound, only to be denied by Jacob Devaney’s goalline clearance.

Jack Fletcher nearly doubled Man United’s lead before the hour mark after Spurs lost the ball carelessly, but was denied by a last-ditch clearance.

Biancheri doubled United’s lead in the 36th minute, tapping the ball home from close range after a beautiful team move.

Callum Olusesi halved the deficit for Spurs, running behind United’s defence to put the ball home.

Summer signing Diego Leon restored United’s two-goal lead before the hour mark with a brilliant solo strike, marking his first goal for the academy.

The Paraguayan received a pass from Biancheri, ran past four markers and then showed to strength to guide the ball home.

Tottenham were reduced to 10-men when Malachi Hardy was received a second yellow after fouling substitute Chido Obi.

Deep into stoppage-time, Biancheri completed his hat-trick after a fine team move.

The victory sees United continue their brilliant start to the campaign, earning 21 points from seven games to sit atop the standings.
