The 2025 NFL trade deadline is quickly approaching and the Buffalo Bills are apparently looking to address two positions.
In her latest article for The Athletic, Dianna Russini reported that Buffalo was looking for help at safety and wide receiver. Both positions are major needs for the Bills.
Joshua Palmer, the team’s big free agent addition at the position, looked poised for a breakout against the Atlanta Falcons, but ended up suffering an injury following his second reception of the game. Curtis Samuel, a costly free agent addition from 2024, has dealt with injuries throughout the season as well. Beyond injuries, Buffalo has not received consistent play from the position. Khalil Shakir leads the position at 268 yards in six games (44.7 YPR).
One intriguing option to watch at the position is Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. Russini reported that Jacksonville is listening to offers for the second-year wide receiver. Thomas Jr. had 1,282 yards receiving as a rookie but has not fit as well in Liam Cohen’s new offense. After seven games, Thomas has 365 yards receiving and 27 receptions. Other potential options at the position include Rashid Shaheed, Calvin Ridley and Jakobi Meyers.
If a trade cannot be made, Buffalo could turn to Gabe Davis. The veteran has been recovering from an injury that he suffered last season on the team’s practice squad.
Safety is another position that has underwhelmed this season. Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin are both on the injured reserve, leaving second-year safety Cole Bishop and the likes of Jordan Poyer (practice squad), rookie Jordan Hancock, Sam Franklin Jr. and Cam Lewis.
If Buffalo’s safety play struggles on Sunday against the Panthers, the position could skyrocket to the top of Buffalo’s needs ahead of the trade deadline.
