Captain Fantastic rescues Newcastle United with 90th minute winner in eventful game against…

**Newcastle United should definitely come with a health warning. The Magpies grabbed their third Premier League win of the season this afternoon, but they didn't half make hard work of it.**

Eddie Howe's side started well and got their reward for their dominance on 18 minutes when Jacob Murphy pickpocketed Calvin Bassey and ran clear for a one v one with Bernd Leno and slotted the ball beyond the former Arsenal goalkeeper into the back of the net via the post.

It felt like it was going to be an easy afternoon for the Magpies at that point, but the Football Gods had other ideas.

If it were simply a case of Fulham waking up and getting back into the game, that would be one thing, but Newcastle became their own worst enemy, giving the ball away in stupid positions, squandering chances in front of goal, and just generally taking frustration to whole new levels.

Bruno Guimaraes slots home the late winner

Newcastle were extremely wasteful for much of the game

------------------------------------------------------

Bruno Guimaraes missed a sitter after Harvey Barnes stood the ball up for him to head wide from about three yards. Nick Woltemade had hit the post in the first half before disappearing from the game.

Jacob Murphy hung his boots up after his goal, well, except for when he was through one v one again with Leno, but this time failed to trouble the Fulham keeper.

Fulham made changes at half-time, bringing on Kevin, who gave them an extra impetus in attack, which ultimately led to their equaliser from Sasa Lukic, who nodded home on the line after a shot deflected off the bar. Unfortunately, Lukic and Sven Botman clashed heads in the process, and while Lukic continued with a bandage on his noggin, Botman was withdrawn, and Fabian Schar replaced him.

Bruno Guimares eventually got his goal

--------------------------------------

It was Newcastle's substitutes that ultimately got the Magpies back into the game. Sandro Tonali almost scored with a trademark audacious effort with a volley from an impossible angle, but Leno was equal to it.

Anthony Elanga was creative down the right flank after replacing Anthony Gordon, but his final ball was irritatingly lacking.

Joelinton almost got Newcastle back into the lead, nodding into the side-netting, which got a large section of the St James' Park crowd off their feet.

The final ten minutes of ht match, it was all Newcastle as they pressed and probed, and it was Will Osula who replaced Nick Woltemade, who made things happen with his deadly pace. A quick counter saw Osula, Elanga and Bruno attacking the Fulham goal. Osula took the ball on himself, cutting into the middle of the pitch and unleashing a left-footed shot which was parried by Leno and then tucked away by a grateful Bruno Guimaraes.

We told you he'd score today, didn't we?

It wasn't pretty; in fact, it was downright frustrating to watch for the most part, but a win is a win, and that's all that matters.
