And the goal from Chemsidine Tailbi exposed an embarrassing Premier League record that the Blues have extended.
Chelsea have now conceded five goals to opposition substitutes in the league this season, more than any other team.
Tailbi is the latest player to come off the bench and punish Maresca's men, following on from Danny Welbeck.
Welbeck netted twice in stoppage time when Brighton came away from Stamford Bridge 3-1 winners in September.

On top of their habit of conceding goals to substitutes, Chelsea have also now conceded five goals in the last 15 minutes of the game.
Only Nottingham Forest (7) have conceded more in the Premier League this season.
Their defeat to Sunderland means they have now dropped down to seventh in the table and five points off leaders Arsenal.
They could now find themselves slipping further away from the top four too, with multiple teams in action on Sunday.
Meanwhile, for Sunderland, they're incredibly up to second in the Premier League after a stunning result at Chelsea.
Regis Le Bris has led his side to within two points of the top and above Manchester City and Liverpool with a fifth win of the season.

What dreams are made of
Sunderland will have not wished for a better start to life back in the Premier League.
The Black Cats have only lost twice on their return to the top-flight, after promotion for the first time in eight years.
And this is sure to be their best result of the season, toppling one of the 'Big Six' away from home.
They have now won seven points from losing positions in the Premier League this season, which is more than any other team.
The last time Sunderland won at Stamford Bridge was 11 years ago, when they claimed three points with a 2-1 victory too.
The Mackems are in dreamland amongst the elite.

talkSPORT's take
Former Chelsea defender Scott Minto told talkSPORT: "It just felt like Chelsea could have played another 90 minutes and not scored.
"I can't blame Enzo Maresca, I can't see what more he could've done.
"He made subs, moved players around...it was one of those games where it would be unfair for Maresca to get stick."
Minto continued: "You have to give Sunderland credit...the top, top teams win this game, that's why I don't put Chelsea at the very top at the minute and why I'd take fourth-place right now."
Ex-Sunderland star Micky Gray then added: "It's about time that a lot of people started to take teams that have just been promoted serious.
"Certainly Sunderland, because they've got good players and they can compete, a brilliant, brilliant win."
'We're second?!'
Winning goalscorer Tailbi said post-match: "I'm feeling great. We knew with Chelsea, we wouldn't have too many occasions to score.
"We are Sunderland, we have a great team with great players. We can do the job and we showed it today.
"We will not talk too soon, but I think we are going to do a great season."

Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor then added when told that his side are second in the Premier League: "We're second?! That's nice, no?
"We are not second, it is not the end of the season. We have to keep focusing."
