The Matildas then took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Sam Kerr, playing her first international since suffering an ACL injury in 2023, was unable to get a touch on Courtney Nevin's free-kick, deceiving goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel.
The hosts almost levelled shortly after the restart through Fishlock, but once again, she was denied a goalscoring farewell. The equaliser eventually came through Manchester United’s Mared Griffiths on her first start for her country, an excellent chipped effort into the top corner. A passing of the torch in a way with Fishlock’s debut for Wales coming a year before Griffiths was even born!
Fishlock and her Wales side were denied their fairytale ending however when Australia found the winner five minutes from time, when Kyra Cooney-Cross fed Arsenal team-mate Caitlin Foord, beating Middleton-Patel in the Wales goal.
There was a standing ovation on the 90th minute as Fishlock was replaced on her final Wales appearance. She exits the international stage having played in just over two-thirds of the 246 matches in the history of Wales' women's football team.
