Five things learned as Manchester United beat Brighton 4-2

Manchester United have beaten Brighton at Old Trafford to make it three consecutive wins in the Premier League.

After fighting off pressure from Brighton at the start, Manchester United broke the deadlock in the 25th minute through Matheus Cunha, after converting Casemiro’s clever pass and causing Old Trafford to erupt.

United kept plugging away and continued to dominate the first half before Casemiro got his name on the scoresheet in the 34th minute as his shot deflected past Bart Verbruggen.

Brighton failed to cause United too many problems in the early stages of the second half, and a goal from Bryan Mbeumo gave United a three-goal cushion before Danny Welbeck beat Senne Lammens with a free-kick.

Poor defending from a set piece cost United in stoppage time when former United target Charalampos Kostoulas scored on his second appearance in the league, beating Joshua Zirkzee to the header.

Then, in the 96th minute, Mbeumo made it 4-2 with his double to complete a good day at the office.

The 3-2 win takes United to fourth in the Premier League standings.

Matheus Cunha scores his first goal for Man Utd

Although most United fans were excited about Cunha based on his performances to date rather than goals, it was great to see the Brazilian score his first goal for the club against Brighton.

Cunha opened the scoring with a sublime strike following an assist from his compatriot Casemiro. It was a moment that felt like it had been brewing since the beginning of the season.

Bryan Mbeumo is already a star player

Like Cunha, Mbeumo is causing big problems for opposing teams as both players prove that most of United’s attacking play comes from the two new signings.

Mbeumo scored to make it 2-0 to continue what has been an impressive start to life at Old Trafford. There is a feeling that the Cameroon international is already a star player and proving to be worth every penny it took to bring him from Brentford in the summer.

Bryan Mbeumo has been directly involved in 4 Premier League goals for Man Utd this season, more than any other player.

The new star made it 4-2 in stoppage time with his fifth goal in a United shirt.

Man Utd took advantage of Brighton’s sloppy play

United’s forward players pressed like dogs and took advantage whenever there was a loose play out from the back. The work rate shown by Cunha, Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko made a huge difference and gave United a big advantage throughout the game.

This is an encouraging sign that United are finally starting to look like a team under Amorim. We can also see that from the results after winning three matches on the bounce.

It could be argued that the defending from the front was better than the defending at the back.

Bruno Fernandes marks 300th appearance with a win

It was fitting for Bruno Fernandes to mark his 300th appearance for United with a win.

The 31-year-old has been United’s most influential player since joining from Sporting CP in 2020. Yet again, he was asked to play in a deeper midfield role but came close to scoring not once but twice.

Fernandes’ link-up play with Mbeumo and Cunha was sublime at times.

Danny Welbeck scores seventh goal against Man Utd

Former United striker Welbeck has an impressive record against the Red Devils.

The 34-year-old gave Brighton hope towards the end of the match when his free-kick made it 3-1.

Controversially sold by Louis van Gaal, you won’t hear many United fans question Welbeck’s ability to find the back of the net. Lammens was on course for his second clean sheet since moving to Old Trafford.
