Jets make decision on Justin Fields

Earlier this week, New York Jets team owner Woody Johnson had some harsh comments about starting quarterback Justin Fields, as he heavily implied that he did not have confidence in the quarterback going forward. However, it sounds like he will still be starting for the team this week.

During a recent press conference, Johnson called out Fields for his poor quarterback rating and implied that he was unable to complete a pass.

“It’s hard when you have a quarterback with the rating that we’ve got,” Johnson said of Fields and the Jets’ offensive struggles. “He has the ability, but something just is not jiving. But if you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you’re going to similar results if you go across the league. You have to play consistently at that position…If we can just complete a pass, it would look good.”

Understandably, this led many to believe that Johnson did not want Fields starting any longer. However, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn [pushed back on that a bit](https://awfulannouncing.com/nfl/aaron-glenn-media-woody-johnson-justin-fields.html) during his press conference this week, as he suggested that despite Johnson’s comments, they were on the same page when it came to Fields.

“Woody puts that in my hand as far as who plays,” Glenn said. “He trusts me to make that decision. He made a comment, and he has every right to his comment. And that comment was actually said by a number of guys, including our quarterback, as far as the efficiency of how we play. We’re not gonna fight that, we have to get better. But I don’t think there’s anywhere in that comment where he said he doesn’t like Justin… overall, we’re on the same page when it comes to that.”

Glenn went on to refuse to name a starting quarterback this week, but it’s now clear that the team will be sticking with Fields, at least for now.

On Saturday, Brian Costello of the New York Post reported that backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor had been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a leg injury. This means that Fields will start for the Jets once again, despite Johnson’s comments.

We’ll have to see how Fields performs and whether or not he can prove Johnson wrong.
