Morten Hjulmand might be heading for Tottenham in the coming months as the Lilywhites aim to bolster their midfield
Tottenham need to be proactive in the January transfer window if Thomas Frank wants his team to compete on all four fronts this season. Despite a recent dip in form, the Lilywhites are far from a poor position in the league. They sit just a point outside the Premier League’s top four and look well on course to challenge for European qualification as the campaign progresses.
That said, the North London club must bring in reinforcements to strengthen the squad for the second half of the season. The first priority for Spurs should be to add depth in midfield, particularly by finding a reliable cover for Joao Palhinha in the #6 role. The Portuguese international has been one of Tottenham’s standout performers this season, but if Frank’s men are to compete seriously on all fronts, they need stronger rotational options in the middle of the park.

Spurs lack a similar profile to Palhinha in the middle of the park… a player who could control the tempo of the game, break-up opposition play, and thrive in transitions. So, Thomas Frank must make sure that the Lilywhites target a new midfielder who can provide those qualities in the coming months.
Tottenham frontrunners for Sporting midfielder Morten Hjulmand’s signature
Recent reports suggest Tottenham are keeping a close eye on Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand as they look to add steel and stability to their midfield. Frank is said to be an admirer of the Danish international and sees him as the ideal player to compete with Palhinha for the holding midfield role.
Additional reports also suggest that Manchester United are keen on the 26-year-old’s signature and want to bring him to Old Trafford in the coming months. Ruben Amorim is a huge admirer of the player, having previously worked with him. The Red Devils were also ‘optimistic’ about landing the Sporting midfielder, having prepared an offer worth £50m for his signature.
However, there now appears to be a twist in the transfer saga involving the 26-year-old. As per Record (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are leading the way for Hjulmand’s signature. The Lilywhites are preparing an offer for the Dane in the coming weeks in the hopes of landing him in January. The report adds that Sporting, however, are said to be firm on their €80m valuation of the midfielder and are unwilling to consider any discounted offers.
Signing Hjulmand should be a no-brainer for Tottenham. The Sporting midfielder has shown time and again that he should be playing on the big stages regularly. And Spurs would also benefit from his experience in the middle of the park. His ability to read the game, coupled with his excellent positional awareness makes him an enticing option to buy in the winter.
