Browns promote ex-Patriots QB ahead of New England game, add Shedeur Sanders to injury report

Bailey Zappe could be one play away from getting back on the field at Gillette Stadium.

Cleveland elevated the former Patriots quarterback from their practice squad for Sunday’s game in Foxborough, while adding Shedeur Sanders to the injury report with a back injury. The backup quarterback is now questionable.

Zappe had been Cleveland’s third-stringer following the Joe Flacco trade, behind Sanders and starter Dillon Gabriel.

A Patriots fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Zappe once ignited a quarterback controversy with Mac Jones. Over the course of his first two seasons in Foxborough, Zappe started eight games and appeared in 14. As the Bill Belichick era wound down, Zappe was 4-4 as a starter, but threw 11 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. He was released during New England’s final cuts in August of 2024.

He’s bounced around a bit since then.

After being waived by the Patriots, Zappe signed with Kansas City’s practice squad. He was poached by the Browns in October and signed to their active roster. Zappe finished the season in Cleveland, starting their Week 18 loss to the Ravens.

Zappe spent this summer with Kansas City again, but after being cut in August, he returned to Cleveland. Now he’ll be back on the active roster.
