Jacob Murphy rushed to hail Bruno Guimaraes as Newcastle United’s “saviour” after their win over Fulham on Saturday.
Guimaraes scored a late winner as Newcastle United beat Fulham 2-1 in the Premier League.
In truth, it masked a poor display from Newcastle. They may well have been tired after the Champions League win against Benfica but their sloppiness on the ball almost cost them at St James’ Park.
Murphy opened the scoring by robbing Calvin Bassey of possession before firing past Bernd Leno in the Fulham goal. Sasa Lukic equalised in the second half and that was hardly against the run of play.
Still, captain fantastic Guimaraes stepped up to score a crucial late winner for Eddie Howe’s side. Quickly after the game, he posted a message on social media.

That was the Brazilian’s 150th start for the club, so scoring a dramatic late winner was quite the way to mark it.
Shortly after the full-time whistle, Guimaraes captioned a social media post: “That’s what it means!!!! Until the end. Glória a Deus. Howay the lads.”
In response to both that and surely his late goal, Murphy wrote: “Saviour.”

How many times Bruno Guimaraes has been Newcastle United’s saviour
Assessing the former Lyon midfielder’s impact at Newcastle by only goals and assists feels very unwise indeed.
Guimaraes is one of Newcastle’s greatest-ever midfielders and his contribution to the club’s success cannot be measured by only those metrics.
Still, it’s worth noting that Saturday was the eighth time in which Guimaraes has scored the winning goal for Newcastle United.
All of those goals have come in the Premier League, meaning Guimaraes has effectively secured 24 points for the club with late goals.
Doing that from a central midfield berth is mightily impressive and only further underlines just what an important figure he is on Tyneside.
This is a player who will go down in club history for years to come.
