Trevon Diggs placed on IR. Has he played his last game for the Dallas Cowboys?

The Dallas Cowboys announced on Saturday that cornerback Trevon Diggs has been placed on injured reserve. Per a team source, the injuries include a concussion that he suffered while at home on Oct. 16 and a knee injury that he’s been battling for most of the season. The designation prevents him from playing in the next four games.

While he is technically eligible to return on Thanksgiving against the Kansas City Chiefs, there’s a chance that Diggs has played his last game for the franchise. He has battled multiple knee injuries since tearing his ACL in 2023, and this latest mystery concussion has added some tension to his already complicated relationship with the team.

Even though he’s on injured reserve, Diggs is eligible to be traded before the Nov. 4 trade deadline. Considering he cannot return for the Cowboys until Nov. 27 at the earliest, a deal sending Diggs out of Dallas would retroactively end his Cowboys tenure with the week six contest against the Carolina Panthers.

As reported on the Star-Telegram on Friday, it still remains unclear how exactly Diggs suffered his concussion. A team source says that he came into the facility on Oct. 17 with a visible mark on his head and was showing concussion symptoms. He was deemed to indeed have the injury by team doctors and was sent home to recover. He was in the locker room during the media availability on Wednesday with a ski mask covering his face and a hoodie on and did not comment when approached by reporters.

“When you guys get an opportunity to talk to Trevon, you can talk to him,” head coach Brian Schottenheimer said when asked about the situation on Friday. “We have more information, but I’ll let him when he’s ready and able to talk about it.”

If he is not traded, it’s also a possibility that he remains on injured reserve for the rest of the season and is released in the offseason. If he is designated as a post-June 1 release, the Cowboys would save over $54 million in cap space over the next three seasons while absorbing a total of just $8.82 million in dead cap over the next two seasons.

Diggs’ move to injured reserve was one of many transactions that the Cowboys announced on Saturday ahead of their matchup with the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Safety Juanyeh Thomas will miss a second consecutive game with a migraine issue that has limited his activity in recent weeks. With fellow safety Donovan Wilson also out with elbow and shoulder injuries, the starting safeties for the Cowboys on Sunday will be Markquese Bell and undrafted rookie Alijah Clark. Defensive back Corey Ballantine -- along with running back Malik Davis -- was elevated from the practice squad for additional depth.

Starting center Cooper Beebe returned to the practice field this week for the first time since suffering a lateral ankle sprain and foot injury against the New York Giants in week two, but he will remain on injured reserve and has been ruled out against the Broncos. Barring a setback next week, he is expected to make his return for the Cowboys’ next game against the Arizona Cardinals on Nov. 3.
